Tevinter

One of the most powerful nations in Thedas, though diminished from its ancient height. Renowned, feared, Tevinter once held practical control over all of Thedas due to its mastery of magic and unending ambition.

Tevinter continues to influence trade and politics, though their territorial reach is no longer all encompassing, they remain a key player across Thedas.

Environment

Tevinter occupies much of northern Thedas, from the capital city of Minrathous outward to frontier regions along the Imperial Highway and the Waking Sea. Cities are grand and luxurious, filled with sprawling palaces, temples dedicated to the Maker, and bustling marketplaces.

Frontier villages, however, face harsh climates and challenging conditions, many rebellious sorts giving them trouble whenever possible. It is here that the Imperium tests in regrowing its branches, attempting to expand back to its rightful dominance.

Culture & Society

Tevinter society is strictly hierarchical. It is defined by wealth, magical ability, and the bloodline of an individual. Noble families who can trace their lineage to the original Dreamers dominate, while slavery remains a crippling punishment. It primarily impacts Elves, but any can end up in chains for performing an offense.

The Imperium venerates the Maker, being the first nation to convert to the religion of Andraste due to the decision of Archon Hessarian. Some quietly revere the Old Gods still, only pretending to go along with the farce, for it is the Old Gods who taught the humans blood magic and allowed the Imperium to decimate the once grand Elven kingdoms.

Lingering bitterness over Tevinter's role in causing the Blight haunts its people. In the political sphere, it is used as a final mocking blow to end conversations as often as slave uprisings are used to uproot frontier villages. The rebellions can be brutally suppressed, but chilling reminders of the magisters of old and their decisions to breach the Golden City cannot be so easily handled.

Politics

An Imperial Archon presides over Tevinter, but true power rests with a council of Magisters who conduct endless intrigues to secure influence and territory. Rivalries can be deadly—political assassinations or magical “accidents” are not uncommon. Imperial provinces are governed by satraps or governors appointed by the Archon, each vying to please their patron Magister and enrich themselves.

Tevinter’s expansion has slowed in some directions, due to ferocious resistance from unincorporated tribes or the ever-growing Darkspawn threat Still, its economic power is formidable, propped up by slave labor, lyrium trade, and coastal commerce. Diplomacy with dwarves is crucial for steady lyrium supply, and attempts to keep rebellious corners of Thedas in line remain a constant struggle.
