1:05 DIVINE AGE
Over two centuries have passed since the Blight ravaged Thedas. When the Deep Roads—ancient underground highways constructed by Dwarves—were overwhelmed by hordes of monstrous creatures known as Darkspawn.
'The Blight' destroyed most of the underground kingdoms, called thaigs, of the Dwarves and spread to the surface world. Thedas was in chaos, a dark age where generations of people lived and died knowing only violence, pestilence, and disorder.
The Darkspawn's leader, an immensely powerful dragon tainted with corruption—known as an Archdemon and believed to be one of the Old Gods worshiped by Tevinter—was slain. It took the sacrifice of many across Thedas, and the help of the legendary Grey Wardens. The Blight ended with the Archdemon's death, the Darkspawn becoming aimless and retreating back into the depths of the earth.
Now, there has stood no common enemy for people to rally against. The scars of the Blight linger, kingdoms rise to make their claim and those of old cling to their powerbase. Many Factions are at play in the regions, but only four are available to align under: The Tevinter Imperium, The Orlesian Empire, The Almarri Freeholds, and The Freelancers.

The Tevinter Imperium, once the mightiest empire ruled by mage-lords called Magisters, shaped much of Thedas through conquest, magic, and religious influence.
Though its power has waned over centuries of infighting, corruption, and lands lost to the Blight, Tevinter still holds vast knowledge of spellcraft and maintains a rigid hierarchy that keeps common folk and slaves under strict control in their caste based society.

In the West, the Orlesian Empire has risen, and alongside it the Andrastian Chantry. Orlais expands steadily, imposing order and a unified religious identity upon a fractured Thedas. Famed chevaliers enforce authority, diplomats and courtiers maneuver through alliances and betrayals, and Templars actively bring a counter to the abuse of magic. A reputation fostered as a bulwark against chaos, Orlais still holds its own inner turmoil. Nobles and politicians scheme constantly to undermine friends and foes, straying from outright acts of villainy.

Beyond strict allegiances lie the Freelancers: a network of mercenaries, adventurers, and traders operating across Thedas who profit from chaos yet often prove invaluable to embattled communities.
They coordinate job postings for escort missions, ruin explorations, blight warding, and any bid requiring a somewhat skilled worker. Opportunistic or altruistic, Freelancers wield the freedom to chart their own path, but lack influence and impact compared to the other factions.
Numerous tribes collectively known as the Almarri Freeholds resist outside rule in Ferelden. Fiercely independent, proud, the Avvar, Chasind, and Clayne clans loosely cooperate to cling to their traditions and autonomy. Suspicious of external powers seeking dominion over their ancestral lands, infighting ceases when it comes to thwarting outsiders.
